Night Diving the Benwood Wreck – Part 2

I love the Benwood as a night dive! It’s hard to get lost since it’s a wreck and the nooks and crannies provide endless places for creatures to hide out. I posted about it the first summer we were here and it remains one of my favorite sites for a night dive.

A couple weeks ago conditions were absolutely perfect for a night dive; clear skies and dead calm winds. I love descending before the sun sets and watching as it grows darker and darker until it’s pitch black without my flashlight. It was a terrific dive with turtles and a goliath grouper who hung out with us the whole dive. I love goliaths! They’re so graceful for such a huge fish. We don’t see them often here so you can imagine how excited I was to turn the corner of the bow and come face to face with one! We’re heading to Looe Key this weekend to dive with a group of friends and they usually have a couple of goliaths hanging out under their boat, I hope they’re there but they might be up in Jupiter for the annual spawning. Check back to see what we find!

Stay warm!
