The Donkey Sanctuary on Bonaire

If you’re in Bonaire to DIVE, DIVE, DIVE then you’ll likely have a day on land before your flight home. What to do? Go see the donkeys at the sanctuary! I promise they’ll make you laugh harder than you have in a long time! Your visit also allows the sanctuary to continue providing for the sweet donkeys of Bonaire.

It’s on the way to Lac Bay which you’ll want to see while you’re there too so make an afternoon of it. The Donkey Sanctuary –> Lac Bay –> salt pyramids –> slave huts then back to town is a solid afternoon of sight-seeing.

Donkeys have lived on Bonaire for hundreds of years but they aren’t native to the island. Bonaire is a desert island with little vegetation and fresh water for the now wild donkeys. Many starve, dehydrate, or are hit by cars. The sanctuary provides a safe, secure and loving place for every rescued donkey to finish out their years.

For a small entry fee plus a few bucks for carrots you can drive through the sanctuary. The donkeys will be waiting for you at the entrance and they’ll surround your car & stick their heads inside hoping for their favorite treat. We bought 3 bags and could have used a 4th.

Have fun!

Until next time …

Stay warm!
