OluKai – I love & hate you…

… mostly hate at this point. Flip-flops are probably my favorite footwear  but I’ll be damned if OluKai’s aren’t the biggest P.O.S. on the market for their $70 price tag. I’ve gone through 3 pairs in as many years and have had two blowouts outside the country. They’re extremely comfortable which is my only excuse for buying so many pairs & I thought maybe I just got unlucky but 3 tries and you’re out!

I just bought the last ones in April or May of this year – there’s no way they’ve lived their full life yet! I only have one pair of flops at a time & I walk more than most people but for $70 they should last 3 years not 8 months. Oddly enough, both failures happened in Mexico over Thanksgiving week. The first was two years ago in Cozumel and the 2nd was just last week in Mahahual.

The scene of the crime

Having the giant feet that I do, I sometimes struggle to find shoes here in the States so good luck finding a pair that’s equivalent to a women’s size 10+ in a country where everyone is smaller. The shoes in Mexico are a lot smaller and both times I had trouble finding a pair that fit. I bought two pairs in Mahahual last week – the first pair for 140 pesos literally fell apart in 2 hours (poorly made Chinese products anyone?) and I was sitting in a beach chair for most of the time I owned them. The second pair was a deal at 80 pesos but they turned the bottom of my feet smurf blue. I took a pic but my feet are in pretty dire need of a pedicure so I won’t disgust you with that one.

Top – the 2 hour wonder, Bottom – these got me home!

I’m going to give OluKai a chance to make good on their warranty. I’ll report back on the outcome.

Do you have a brand of flops you swear by? My other half has a pair of freewaters that he loves. They’re extremely comfortable too, sometimes I wear them when I cook because they’re so cushy. Maybe something from them will be my next move. One thing’s for sure, even if OluKai sends me a replacement I won’t be traveling with them. They’ve proven to be untrustworthy travel partners!

Sorry for the rant but I thought I’d save you all some $  🙂

Warm thoughts to all!
