Keys Life – Sombrero Beach!

We found a beach! The beach is one of the things we miss the most from home. Our stretch of beach is about 3 miles and we love taking the dogs the full length on sunny winter weekend days but we don’t have that here. We don’t have anything close to that, but we did find a little strip of sand & it was AWESOME!

If you’ve been to the keys or read about them then you know there really aren’t any beaches to speak of. There are a few small ones scattered around with most being man-made (fine by me!).  Pennekamp has a couple of little “beaches” but the water is pretty murky and the sand isn’t the sink your feet in warm sand type that you think of when you think of the beach. And I get it, the Keys coastline is iron shore, rock & coral – it’s what creates the diving we love but it’s not good for forming beaches. It’s a rare place that has both great diving and great beaches.

Sombrero beach is everything you want in a beach! Look at that glorious strip of sand!

Lined by palm trees this white sand beach gives way to beautiful, clear turquoise water with a nice sandy bottom – perfect for swimming on a hot day.

And it’s dog friendly! Here in the Keys, dogs aren’t allowed on any of the beaches. I think Sombrero is the only beach in the Keys that allows dogs and ours were just as stoked as we were to be there! They love the beach at home, wading in the shallows & nibbling on seaweed. They went about their favorite activities immediately. Our old girl even dug up a dead, decomposing lizard (how did you find that? gross!).

Look at these happy, sandy dog faces!

The people had a great time too! Is there anything better then laying in the hot sand with the sun on your face?

The beach is surrounded by a very well-maintained park (I didn’t see a single piece of trash anywhere) with grassy patches, picnic benches – each with their own shade structure, volleyball courts, bathrooms and showers. There are dog bag dispensers too if you find yourself in need. At the far end there’s also a kayak launch. It looks like a great place to paddle & we’ll probably bring our boards there at some point. Sombrero is on Marathon Key just over an hour from where we are in Key Largo. It’s a beautiful drive with expansive ocean and bay views throughout.

If you’re in the Keys and longing for a beach break check out Sombrero, you won’t be disappointed!

Until we meet again!

Warm thoughts to all!
